Africa’s natural history alone would make a dozen visits

Africa’s natural history alone would make a dozen visits worthwhile – where else on earth can you fall asleep to the sound of lions roaring, or watch a million flamingos take off from the waters of a remote soda lake? Parts of Africa boast scenery so spectacular they’ll damn near blow your mind, but the essence of this incredible continent isn’t in any desert, mountain or lake. It’s the spirit of the people – pushing, shoving, sweating, dancing, singing and laughing – that infects so many visitors with a travel bug so powerful they’ll never stop coming back, sometimes against all sense or reason.

ALLIANCE ONE ANTICIPATES A GOOD BUYING SEASON

Mark Mason showing Minister Chiba around AOTTL Unprocessed tobacco Storage. Elizabeth Chuma- Receiving and and Green Storage Manager
Morogoro: The 2013 tobacco buying season began earlier this year in May and Alliance One Tobacco Tanzania Limited (AOTTL) is anticipating an encouraging season for tobacco growers. The buying targets that AOTTL is working towards are 29.93 million kilograms for Flue Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco and 1.04 million kilograms for Dark Fire Cured tobacco (DFC). Currently the season is midway and the tobacco already purchased stands at 16.42 million kilograms for FCV tobacco and 0.06 million kilograms for DFC tobacco.

“Alliance One prides itself in being well prepared for every new tobacco buying season, this helps us focus on maintaining our high standards and quality. Working with all our stakeholders from the farmer right through to regulators; our employees and our customers, we work hard  to ensure out industry leading quality is maintained at all levels of the production chain. This year we are focusing on increasing our efficiencies in our production chain, to build on the successes of last year where we produced in excess of 30 million kilograms of tobacco at our facility in Morogoro,” said Mark Mason, Alliance One’s MD.

The targets set by AOTTL agronomy experts annually are in line with growing the Company, and satisfying local and international clientele with both the quantity and quality they expect from Alliance One. AOTTL farmers are also considered in the annual strategies through the investment by the Company in enhancing farmers’ skills to improve their methods. The signs of better yields are already evident as reflected in the current average price per kilogram of US$2.40 for FCV, which exceeds the targeted average price of US$2.06. The same positive results are reflected in DFC average prices which currently stand at US$1.68 from a target of US$1.47. AOTTL has already purchased US$39.90 million worth of FCV and US$960,000.00 worth of DFC as of 30th June 2013.

Tanzania’s tobacco farming has experienced tremendous growth in recent years due to the conditions prevailing within the industry including, improved marketing transparency; effective production management; greater crop compliance; organising smallholder farmer units into Primary Societies and increased productivity potential. The improvements noted in the last few years are the culmination of a successful partnership between all stakeholders in the tobacco farming industry.

“Alliance One continues to be a significant contributor to Tanzania’s annual tax revenue, and welcomes the on-going and planned developments to infrastructure especially the road networks. A better road network can only help enhance the Company’s efficiencies, considering the fuel levy increase mentioned in the recent budget speech. I am excited that Alliance One continues to play its part in contributing to Tanzania’s development, especially in light of a buying season that already looks positive at this stage,” said Mason.

Were Jews ever really slaves in Egypt, or is Passover a myth?

The reality is that there is no evidence whatsoever that the Jews were ever enslaved in Egypt. Yes, there's the story contained within the bible itself, but that's not a remotely historically admissible source. I'm talking about real proof; archeological evidence, state records and primary sources. Of these, nothing exists. The time has come for all those deluded mentally enslaved Black Christian Zionists to wake the hell up and stop believing the mythological crap they have been fed. Enough of bullshit------DAVID

Funny Portraits of Dogs Dressed Like Humans

Graphic designer-turned-photographer Sebastian Magnani combines man and his best four-legged friend for a collection of whimsical portraits in his series titled Underdogs. Using the head and fluffy fur of a dog cloaked in human clothing, each portrait that Magnani creates features its own personality while putting a smile on the viewer's face. Some of the photographer's canine subjects even have accessories like sunglasses or hats to go on top of their full and luscious manes, heightening the resemblance between man and his dog and making the image all the more hilarious.

The Berne, Switzerland-based photographer first embarked on this fun project in 2009 with no expectation beyond entertaining himself and any viewers that may come across the playful portraits. Since its inception, the series has reached all across he world. With Part 1 and Part 2 of the project currently released, Magnani promises a Part 3 to follow sometime in the near future.

Raspberry nutrition facts

Wonderfully delicious, bright red-colored raspberry is among the most popular berries grown all over the world. They are rich source of health promoting plant-derived nutrients, minerals, and vitamins that are essential for optimum health.

Botanically, the plant is a small shrub belonging to the family Rosaceae, of the genus: Rubus. It grows very well in temperate regions. The exotic berry is native to Europe but now widely cultivated in many temperate regions all over the world. Chief producers of raspberries are Poland, United States, Germany, and Chile.

Botanical name: Rubus idaeus.

Health benefits of raspberries
Delicious raspberries are low in calories and saturated fats but are rich source of dietary fiber and antioxidants. 100 g berries contain just 52 calories but provide 6.5 g of fiber (16% of daily recommended intake).

Raspberries have significantly high levels of phenolic flavonoid phytochemicals such as anthocyanins, ellagic acid (tannin), quercetin, gallic acid, cyanidins, pelargonidins, catechins, kaempferol and salicylic acid. Scientific studies show that these antioxidant compounds in these berries have potential health benefits against cancer, aging, inflammation, and neuro-degenerative diseases.

Xylitol is a low-calorie sugar substitute extracted from raspberries. A teaspoonful of xylitol contains just 9.6 calories as compared to that of sugar, which has 15 calories. Xylitol absorbs more slowly in the intestines than sugar and does not contribute to high glycemic index, and thus, can be helpful in diabetics.

Fresh raspberries are an excellent source of vitamin-C, which is also a powerful natural antioxidant. 100 g berries provide 26.2 mg or about 47% of DRI of vitamin C. Consumption of fruits rich in vitamin C helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents, counter inflammation, and scavenge harmful free radicals.

Raspberry contains anti-oxidant vitamins like vitamin A, and vitamin E. In addition to the above-mentioned antioxidants, is also rich in several other health promoting flavonoid poly phenolic antioxidants such as lutein, zea-xanthin, and ß-carotene in small amounts. Altogether, these compounds help act as protective scavengers against oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that play a role in aging and various disease processes.

Raspberry has an ORAC value (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) of about 4900 per 100 grams, crediting it among the top-ranked ORAC fruits.

Raspberries contain a good amount of minerals like potassium, manganese, copper, iron and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure. Manganese is used by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase. Copper is required in the production of red blood cells.

They are rich in B-complex group of vitamins and vitamin K. The berries contain very good amounts of vitamin B-6, niacin, riboflavin, and folic acid. These vitamins are function as co-factors and help body in the metabolism of carbohydrates, protein and fats.

Preparation and serving methods

To wash Raspberries, dip them in cold water in a large bowl for few seconds and swish gently few times to remove any sand and insecticide residues. Gently pat them dry using paper towel or cloth. This method will help bring them to normal room temperature, and so also increases their flavor and enriches the taste. Then remove the stems and caps, if any, by simply pinching off with fingers or using a paring knife.

Real Animals That You Didn't Know Existed no 5 Amazonian Royal Flycatche

Amazonian Royal Flycatcher
The Amazonian Royal Flycatcher is found in forests and woodlands throughout most of the Amazon basin. They are about 6 1/2 inches in length and like to dart out from branches to catch flying insects or pluck them from leaves. They build very large nests (sometimes up to 6 feet long) on branches near water. The nest hangs over the water which makes it hard for predators to reach. (Image via hamusoku)
